Projects

This space will be dedicated to sharing the Alumni Chapter's vision for infrastructure and educational development at the school in Freetown.  We will highlight ongoing projects and initiatives aimed at putting the institution on the international stage of education.  Our goal is to help create an atmosphere that fosters educational curiosity while delivering world-class instruction, experiential learning and social frameworks to prepare our students for the future.

Science Labs Renovation 2026

Equipping Tomorrow's Scientists Today

The Vision

Across Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, six science laboratories are in urgent need of full modernization to meet today's educational standards and prepare students for STEM careers. These labs are not just classrooms, they are where curiosity is sparked, critical thinking is developed, and futures are shaped.

In partnership with a professional architect, we have completed detailed designs and identified reliable suppliers for laboratory equipment, furniture, and chemicals. Our goal is to deliver fully functional, safe, and inspiring laboratories that support hands-on, inquiry-based learning.

To ensure excellence, we have recruited two highly experienced IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education)-level educators:

  • A retired UK-based Biology A-Level teacher and examiner

  • A veteran Chemistry teacher with over 30 years of teaching experience across Sierra Leone

These labs are being built around their expertise and will serve not only our students, but also as training hubs for science teachers, multiplying impact across schools and communities.

Once operational, the laboratories will also support STEM Holiday Clubs, giving students year-round access to real experiments, innovation, and discovery.

The Sierra Leone Grammar School was founded on 25th March 1845 as Church Missionary Society (C.M.S.) Grammar School - the first secondary school in Sub-Saharan Africa. The school started with 14 pupils, drawn from students of Fourah Bay College and was housed at Regent Square in a massive building which still exists.
